Description
A semi ruined castle on the Welsh marches. It could be anywhere in Britain, this being
the land of old battles. What’s particular about this castle is its undisturbed state.
Deliberately left, the crumbling structures seem to rise out of the thicket, a haven for
wildlife. I have drawn this castle before for an exhibition at Southampton City Art
Gallery called ‘Capture the Castle’. It was a large charcoal drawing called ‘Keep Wall’
and featured in the publication of the same name. Part demolished and rebuilt many
times in its history, the castle in this drawing seems to tilt against the angle of the path.
Scrub and saplings frame or disguise it, this part of the outer wall seems to be
disappearing into the ground. (Wigmore Castle, Herefordshire)
