This is the River Fowey at Lostwithiel, Cornwall. It’s a landscape which has seen huge changes in its history. Lostwithiel was once an active port – the harbour is gone now, and the river is sufficiently silted up to produce a slow, meandering flow to the sea. Trees line its bank, and if you’re lucky you might see the blue flash of a kingfisher. Very tidal, there are sea mists that come in across the nature reserve. This was an autumnal morning, and the water vapour rose from the river, creating atmospheric lighting conditions and interesting and dramatic shapes. I called the drawings Lost River – after Lostwithiel – but also for poetic reasons. It describes partly how I was feeling last year. I would say that my drawings are partly an emotional response to and engagement with the landscape.
